“Hire qualified people!” That’s what I keep hearing from the primarily white men who troll my DEI-Derangement Syndrome articles on Medium and LinkedIn. I’ve heard a few other things from them, too, usually having something to do with body parts and my parents, but I do try to engage a “diversity of thoughts” on this issue.

Ironically, when I still pursued the soul-crushing journey of finding one of those “good corporate jobs,” I was told I was “too big for the job” or “overqualified for the position.” So, am I unqualified, too experienced, not experienced enough, too credentialed, not knowledgeable enough, or just too damn old?

Of course, most of the time, I’m just considered “one of those DEI Hires.” Read too Black.

Lies. Lies. Damned lies.

Let’s dispense with the lies. Especially, the ones white men tell themselves about DEI.

White men over 40 aren’t being squeezed out by Black and Brown “DEI hires.” Age bias, and low‑ball offers from twenty‑somethings willing to work for half the salary, and twice the tacos on Tuesdays are more likely to be the culprits. High cholesterol and ulcers be damned.
